Introduction

As a software engineer, choosing where to work is a big decision. I’ve been working at a consulting firm for a few months now, and I want to share why I think it’s a great choice for engineers.

In the tech world, you usually have a few options for where to work: startups, big tech companies, product-based companies, and consulting firms. Each type of company offers different experiences and opportunities. Last year, I had to choose between a startup in Berlin, Zalando (a big product-based company), and a consulting firm. Even though I’d heard some negative things about consulting, I chose the consulting firm. In this article, I’ll talk about why I made that decision and why it might be a good option for other software engineers too.

Consulting Firms Rethink Business Post-COVID-19

In a typical pre-pandemic week at a consulting firm, you’d find yourself traveling to a client site on Monday morning and returning home by Thursday afternoon. Fridays were usually for home office or office work. The idea was that being away from home meant more dedicated work hours. However, COVID-19 drastically changed this dynamic, halting travel and reshaping our work patterns permanently.
